Elections B.C. officials have begun a recount in the battleground riding of Delta South, where star candidate Wally Oppal is fighting the battle of his life to win a seat in the B.C. legislature.
Oppal has claimed victory in the riding, but unofficial results have the B.C. Attorney General leading by only two votes against Independent Vicki Huntington.
Huntington has 9,617 votes compared to Oppal’s 9,619, triggering an automatic recount.
Huntington says she wants to personally see every one of the 54 ballots declared spoiled during Monday’s vote tally.
Oppal likens the process to a nail biting hockey match.
“It’s like watching the Canucks in overtime — that’s the best way I can put it,” Oppal told CTV.
“So you go with the to and fro and you keep your fingers crossed an apparently I’ve been declared the winner but I think we have to be a bit cautious about that.”
Oppal says he knew he was in for a tough fight when he jumped to the Delta riding from his former Vancouver-Fraserview constituency.
He said the move was a logical choice, because he has lived in the area for more than a decade.
